Important information on toxic shock syndrome (TSS) during menstruation: TSS is a rare but serious health risk. It is triggered by toxins from certain bacteria that occur naturally on and in the body. Both children and adults of both sexes can be affected, regardless of menstruation. About half of the documented cases of TSS affect menstruating women who use tampons. In exceptional cases, the disease can be fatal. Warning signs that begin flu-like and worsen rapidly include: Fever over 39 °C with sudden onset, nausea with vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash similar to sunburn, throat discomfort, dizziness and/or unconsciousness. If you experience one or more symptoms during your period, remove the tampon immediately and contact a healthcare professional without delay.
