Information on toxic shock syndrome (TSS) during menstruation:
TSS is a rare but serious disease. It is triggered by toxins from a bacterium that occurs in or on the human organism. Children, men and women can be affected – regardless of whether they are menstruating or not. About half of the documented cases of TSS affect women who use tampons. In exceptional cases, the disease can be fatal. The following symptoms, which develop rapidly and initially appear flu-like, may indicate TSS: Sudden onset of fever above 39 °C, nausea with vomiting, liquid stools, skin rash similar to sunburn, discomfort in the throat, circulatory problems and/or loss of consciousness. If one or more of these symptoms occur during your menstruation, you should remove the tampon immediately and seek medical help without delay. Point out TSS and inform them about your menstruation. This means that the disease can be diagnosed in good time and treated effectively. After a TSS illness, you should seek medical advice before using tampons again.
